We Let AI Explain Astrology, But Never Calculate It: What We Learned Building GrahMaitri

Most online astrology in India runs on a simple loop: give a free reading, scare the user a little, then sell a remedy. It works because people reach for astrology at anxious moments, such as a wedding, a job change or a new baby, and a worried customer pays quickly.

We built GrahMaitri, a Marathi-first astrology service, on a different premise. The calculations must be correct, the language must be the user’s own, and nothing should be sold through fear. Those three rules shaped almost every product decision we made.

The problem wasn’t a lack of astrology apps
Marathi families already have plenty of options. What they lack is one they can trust. Two problems kept coming up.

Most tools aren’t truly in Marathi. Many are Hindi or English first, with Marathi added later and translated word for word. Terms such as janmapatrika, gun milan and nakshatra carry specific meaning for the family reading them, and a clumsy translation makes users doubt the whole result.

Nobody could check the answers. Two sites would give the same family different panchang timings, and neither explained how it got there. When a reading influences something as big as a marriage date, “trust us” isn’t enough.

Rule one: the engine calculates, the AI only explains

AI chat is the obvious feature to build today, and we built one. But we set a hard line early: the language model never calculates astrology.

Planetary positions, dashas, Gun Milan scores, doshas and panchang all come from a dedicated calculation engine. It uses sidereal Lahiri positions and reads birth time in the birthplace’s own time zone, not an assumed IST. The AI astrologer receives the finished chart as structured facts and does one job: explain them in plain language, in the user’s language.

A language model is very good at sounding confident, which is exactly the wrong quality when deciding whether two horoscopes match. A chatbot that invents a planetary position sounds just as sure as one that reads it correctly. Keeping the numbers out of its hands removes that risk.

We also check the engine against established references. For 2026, every festival and vrat date we compute matched a widely used reference panchang to the day. For 2027, a few dates differ by a day, because Smarta, Vaishnava and regional traditions genuinely disagree. We say so on the page instead of hiding it.

Rule two: no fear, no false promises

Pricing follows the same thinking. Previews are free, a full Kundli or Gun Milan report is a one-time ₹49, and AI chat is billed per minute with the first minute free. Users top up a wallet and spend it on what they need. Nothing renews behind their back, and guests can buy a report without an account.

Birth details reveal a date, a time and a place, which makes them deeply personal. We keep them out of URLs, analytics events and logs. They are stored only when a user chooses to save a profile, and they are deleted with the account. Login is by one-time code, so there is no password to leak.

What building for one community taught us

Building for Marathi speakers first, instead of translating a generic product later, changed what we noticed. Families here care about baby-name letters by nakshatra, about Maharashtra-specific festival dates, and about reading a result aloud to grandparents in their own words. A product built for the “average Indian user” would have skipped all of that.

The wider lesson is that trust is a product feature you build early, not a marketing line you add later. Deciding what we would never do was more useful than any growth plan.

Where we go from here

GrahMaitri is still early. Real-astrologer chat and calls and more calculators are on the way, and each will have to meet the same three rules. The constraint stays fixed: if an astrologer, human or AI, can’t show the chart behind the answer, we shouldn’t give the answer.

GrahMaitri is a Marathi-first online astrology service from Grahmaitri Digital Services, offering Kundli, Gun Milan, daily panchang, rashi bhavishya and an AI astrologer in Marathi and English. Learn more at grahmaitri.com.
