Over the course of his distinguished career, Dr. Baig has earned national and international recognition for his pioneering work in bariatric surgery and abdominal wall reconstruction (AWR). His expertise spans bariatric surgery, complex hernia repair, abdominal wall reconstruction, hiatal surgery, biliary surgery and colorectal surgery, making him one of the most respected specialists in digestive surgery in India.
Dr. Baig’s contributions to surgical science extend far beyond clinical practice. He has authored more than 40 peer-reviewed publications in leading national and international medical journals and has played a significant role in shaping modern surgical education in the field. He is the editor of the Springer publications Newer Concepts and Procedures in Hernia Surgery – An Atlas and Management of Nutritional and Metabolic Complications of Bariatric Surgery. He has also authored the book Nutrition, Obesity and Bariatric Surgery and co-authored monographs on Diseases of the Common Bile Duct and Liver Surgery.
His academic work has been featured in internationally acclaimed publications, including Springer’s Essentials of Mini-One Anastomosis Gastric Bypass and in leading scientific platforms such as Nature.
Dr. Baig currently serves as the President-elect of the Hernia Society of India (HSI) and Treasurer of the Indian Association of Gastrointestinal Endosurgeons (IAGES). He has previously served as an Executive Committee member of the Indian Association of Surgical Gastroenterology (IASG) and is the Chairman of OSSI-IH (Obesity Surgeons Society of India – Integrated Health), placing him among the most influential leaders shaping the future of gastrointestinal surgery in India.
Renowned for his dedication to surgical education, Dr. Baig has organised numerous national and international conferences and hands-on workshops. Through advanced training programmes in minimal access surgery, bariatric surgery and hernia surgery conducted at his centre, he has mentored more than 200 surgeons from across the world, many of whom are now leading specialists in their respective regions.
He also leads the IFSO-endorsed Certification Course on Integrated Care of Obesity (CICO), a multidisciplinary programme designed to train physicians, surgeons, nutritionists, psychologists and physical trainers in comprehensive obesity management.
Dr. Baig has also spearheaded the first multicentre data collaboration on bariatric surgery in India and led the first publication analysing national trends in ventral hernia procedures, further strengthening the evidence base for modern surgical practice in the country.
In addition to his clinical and academic leadership, he serves as Section Editor of the journal Hernia, Associate Editor of the Journal of Bariatric Surgery, and is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Minimal Access Surgery, contributing to the global advancement of gastrointestinal and metabolic surgery.
